Urgent Climate Alert: SA Faces Fatal Heatwaves and Food Shocks Without Action

South Africa is on the cusp of a climate emergency, with the Presidential Climate Commission warning of fatal heatwaves, drastic cuts to maize yields, water shortages, and coastal flooding that threaten critical infrastructure. Temperatures across the country are rising at nearly double the global average, intensifying extreme weather and amplifying risks to food production and public safety .

The commission’s report highlights the potential for a 75% reduction in maize yields—South Africa’s main staple—and widespread food shocks if no urgent climate interventions are implemented . Heatwaves are expected to become more frequent and severe, presenting serious health dangers and triggering disruptions in agriculture and water availability.

Water stress is set to escalate, while coastal infrastructure faces mounting flood risks as a result of extreme weather patterns linked to global warming. The Commission emphasises that without timely action—such as early warning systems, drought-resistant farming methods, improved irrigation, and investment in cooling and water resilience—the combined threats could undermine both food and economic security.

As South Africa navigates a warming future, the report calls on government, farmers, and communities to implement concrete strategies now. Failure to act could lead to severe heat-related mortality, dramatic food shortages, and irreversible damage to infrastructure.
