Thulas Nxesi, the Minister of Employment and Labour, has named Onke Mjo as the acting Director-General (DG) of the department, effective from January 1 until a permanent appointment is made. Mjo, previously on a 12-month contract as Deputy Director-General, possesses a BA degree, higher diploma, and postgraduate (honours) from the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Additionally, she holds a qualification in senior management development from the University of Stellenbosch Business School.
With a background as Chief of Staff and prior experience as a Special Adviser in ministries such as Sport & Recreation and Public Works & Infrastructure, Mjo has held various senior management positions, including Chief Director and DDG. Notably, she contributed to sports administration and event/project management, participating in the Fifa local organizing committee for the 2010 Fifa World Cup.
Minister Nxesi highlighted Mjo’s role in addressing corruption and maladministration, emphasizing the focus on enhancing performance and service delivery. The recruitment process for a permanent DG is ongoing, with Mjo assuming responsibilities until the position is filled permanently. The department’s efforts against corruption involve collaboration with the Auditor-General’s office and law enforcement agencies.
