Former Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan has been hospitalized, according to a statement released by his family on Tuesday. Gordhan, aged 75, is currently receiving what the family describes as the “best available medical care.”
In the statement, the family requested privacy during this challenging time, emphasizing that updates on Gordhan’s condition will be provided when appropriate. “The family of the former Minister of Public Enterprises, Mr. Pravin Gordhan, would like to inform the media and the public that he has been admitted to hospital,” the statement read. “Mr. Gordhan is receiving the best available medical care. The family has requested privacy during this difficult time.”
This development comes after Gordhan was unable to attend a meeting of the Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises last month due to health concerns, for which he had issued an apology. At that time, doctors had advised him against traveling. Earlier in March, the Department of Public Works confirmed Gordhan’s retirement following the May 29 elections.
Pravin Gordhan has had a distinguished career in public service, having served as the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs. He was also the Deputy Commissioner of the South African Revenue Service (SARS) from 1998 to 1999 before being appointed as the Commissioner in 1999.
