The N2 highway between Kokstad and Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu‑Natal has been closed following an unusually heavy snowfall that left the road icy and treacherous. Authorities say the closure extends into the Eastern Cape and is designed “to save lives,” as visibility dropped and ice patches emerged across the route.
Snow accumulation and freezing surfaces prompted road teams to advise motorists to delay travel until conditions improve. Weather officials issued a Level 2 disruptive snow warning for the KZN midlands, with adjacent Eastern Cape mountain passes also affected.
Traffic and weather authorities are closely monitoring conditions, coordinating efforts to clear roads and assess when it’s safe to reopen the N2. Motorists are urged to avoid the route until road safety is restored.
