The Independent Examinations Board (IEB) has announced an improved pass rate of 98.46% in the National Senior Certificate (NSC) results for the year, slightly higher than the 2022 pass rate of 98.42%. Out of the candidates who passed, 88.59% are eligible for degree study, 8.31% for diploma study, and 1.57% for higher certificate level study. A total of 15,180 candidates took the IEB NSC exams in October and November 2023 at 275 examination centers, with an increase in both full-time and part-time candidates compared to 2022.
The IEB emphasized that the exams were conducted without irregularities, utilizing real-time electronic video monitoring systems at examination venues. Confidence Dikgole, the CEO of IEB, acknowledged the challenges faced by learners during their five-year journey, including disruptions due to the Covid-19 pandemic. She highlighted the pressure on learners from societal expectations, leading to mental health issues that can affect exam performance. Dikgole called for a focus on nurturing confident and independent learners, emphasizing that success goes beyond achieving top results in matric.
Dikgole urged parents to be actively involved in their children’s education and emphasized the importance of mental well-being. She encouraged learners to understand that education does not end with matric but opens doors to various opportunities. Dikgole advocated for a shift away from a pass-rate focused competition lens, allowing learners to perceive their achievements with different perspectives.
Congratulating the matriculants on achieving a 100% pass rate in the IEB-administered 2023 NSC exams, Jacques Nel, the executive head of Somerset College in Somerset West, praised the students for their commitment, perseverance, and consistent efforts. He expressed gratitude to the dedicated teachers who played a crucial role in preparing the students for success, setting a commendable standard for excellence.
