In a notable shift toward the northern hemisphere, World Cup-winning coach Jake White has expressed his reservations about the proposed relocation of the Springboks to the Six Nations.
Speculation regarding the Boks’ integration into the Six Nations gained traction following the entry of South Africa’s premier franchises—the Bulls, Stormers, Sharks, and Lions—into the United Rugby Championship (URC) in 2020. Local teams, including the Cheetahs, have also participated in European competitions such as the Champions Cup and Challenge Cup since the previous year.
Reports suggest that South Africa is set to join the Six Nations in 2026, following their commitment to Sanzaar until the conclusion of a broadcasting deal in 2025. The potential move is believed to offer significant commercial benefits for SA Rugby, with favorable time zones enhancing its appeal.
However, White, currently at the helm of the Bulls, is adamant that the Six Nations should maintain its exclusivity for the England, France, Ireland, Scotland, Italy, and Wales national sides. Expressing his views to English media after the Bulls’ Champions Cup clash with Bristol Bears in England, White emphasized his commitment to the traditional essence of the competition.
“As an old-school guy, I can’t envision South Africa playing in the Six Nations,” White asserted. Reflecting on the rich history of the tournament and paying tribute to recently deceased rugby legend JPR Williams, he voiced concerns about diluting the essence of the competition by introducing additional nations.
“I hope it won’t happen. I’d probably get criticized for saying that back home,” White added, underscoring the potential backlash he might face for his traditionalist stance.
After securing a 31-17 victory against Bristol, White’s Bokless team aims to deliver another impressive performance as they face French side Bordeaux Bègles at Loftus Stadium in Pretoria on Saturday at 3 pm. Bordeaux has excelled in the Champions Cup this season, already securing their spot in the next round with a game to spare. The Bulls, undefeated in Champions Cup matches at home, seek to maintain their stronghold on home turf.
