A man reportedly jumped from the rooftop of Hotel Sky in Cape Town’s CBD on Monday, June 9, prompting a Western Cape police investigation. Provincial spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk confirmed the incident occurred just before 4 pm, with crime scene experts and detectives combing the area for clues, and a post-mortem underway to establish the deceased’s identity and cause of death.
Hotel Sky Managing Director Paul Kelley stated the man entered as a walk-in visitor, ascended to the 28th floor, and tragically jumped, despite existing safety measures and proximity to the Sky Hi Ride attraction. Kelley extended heartfelt condolences to the man’s family and stressed that the incident was unrelated to the attraction. He emphasised the importance of recognising mental health and urged the community to treat such issues with seriousness.
Road closures were in place around Lower Long Street to facilitate investigations, and motorists were advised to avoid the area. The police have asked anyone with relevant information to contact Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
Hotel Sky affirmed its compliance with local and international safety standards and reiterated its commitment to the security and wellbeing of guests, staff, and visitors.
