Bafana Bafana have clinched an impressive R46.9 million in prize money following their historic progression to the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon). This marks their first semi-final appearance in 24 years, achieved through a thrilling penalty shootout victory against Cape Verde, with goalkeeper Ronwen Williams making a remarkable four saves.
As part of the remaining quartet in the competition, which includes Nigeria (their semi-final opponents), DR Congo, and hosts Ivory Coast, Bafana Bafana have already secured the aforementioned prize fund. This substantial increase in prize money was announced by Caf President Dr. Patrice Motsepe before the tournament, with a notable 40% boost.
Motsepe expressed the positive strides made by Caf in enhancing prize money for major competitions, raising the Afcon winner’s prize to USD 7,000,000, reflecting the 40% increment. He emphasized the intended impact on football development and assistance to member associations.
Looking ahead, if Bafana Bafana advances to the final, they stand to secure a minimum of R75 million in prize money. Moreover, winning the tournament would bring an even more substantial reward of R131 million.
The next challenge for the South African team is a semi-final clash against Nigeria on Wednesday, February 7th, at 7 pm SA time. Under the leadership of Hugo Broos, Bafana Bafana aims to secure a spot in the final, aspiring to replicate the success of the 1996 team that claimed the Afcon title.
