Al Ahly Confirms Interest in Orlando Pirates Star Monnapule Saleng

Egyptian football powerhouse Al Ahly has officially confirmed its interest in acquiring Orlando Pirates star Monnapule Saleng, marking a significant development in the ongoing transfer saga. The 27-year-old attacking midfielder, valued at €1.2 million (R20.4 million) by Transfermarkt, has been linked to the Cairo-based club for months, with reports indicating Al Ahly’s willingness to pay a premium to secure his signature.

Saleng, known for his versatility as a playmaker and winger, joined Orlando Pirates in 2021 but has been sidelined for over six months due to fitness and selection issues, sparking speculation about his future. Earlier this year, he hinted at dissatisfaction with his treatment at the Soweto Giants, with plans to submit a transfer request at the end of the season.

The move has gained momentum amid reports linking Al Ahly’s coaching overhaul to Saleng’s potential arrival, though Orlando Pirates have yet to publicly comment on the bid. A former Al Ahly recruitment chief recently revealed the club had previously pursued Saleng, describing him as a “long-term target”.

Social media reactions have been mixed, with some fans praising the potential signing—such as one Instagram post declaring, “Monnapule Saleng will be a fine addition for Al Ahly”—while others question the financial terms. Analysts suggest the deal could reshape Al Ahly’s midfield ahead of crucial continental competitions, while Pirates face pressure to retain their key players amid persistent transfer rumors.

As negotiations continue, all eyes are on whether Saleng will become the latest South African talent to make the leap to Egypt’s top league.
