The life of South African acting icon Presley Oageng Chweneyagae will be celebrated today at a memorial service in Mahikeng, his hometown, as friends, family, and fans come together to mourn the loss of the Tsotsi star. The event, held at the Mmabatho Convention Centre, commenced at 11:00 AM and will conclude at 2:00 PM, offering attendees a chance to reflect on his impactful career and legacy. Chweneyagae, known affectionately as “Cobrizi,” passed away last week after battling a respiratory illness.

Born in Mahikeng, Chweneyagae rose to global fame for his role as Tsotsi in the 2005 Oscar-winning film of the same name, cementing his status as one of South Africa’s most talented actors. His versatility was praised by peers, including co-star Tshepo Maseko, who described him as a “playful” yet brilliant performer unafraid of taking risks. Maseko recalled Chweneyagae’s ability to “steal the limelight” while bringing joy to every set.

Following today’s memorial, a second service will be held in Pretoria on Thursday, June 5, at 320 Pretorius Street, starting at 11:00 AM. His final farewell is scheduled for Saturday, June 7, at the Akasia Community Hall in Pretoria, beginning at 8:00 AM. The Pretoria events aim to accommodate fans and colleagues unable to attend the Mahikeng gathering, ensuring a nationwide celebration of his contributions to film and culture.
